I’m thinking about taking a complete career change and going to Uni to study for my BSc in Diagnostic Radiography in 2007. I will be a mature student and will be 43 at the end of the degree.
What are my chances for a reasonable career progression at this age?
I understand that I’ll have to do the obligatory 1 or 2 years as a general radiographer before I can specialize or get promoted. But do any of you think, or know, if age may hold me back?
All comments welcome, but would like to hear for people that have been in my position.
Thanks |

With the new age discrimination legislation that's come in it would actually be illegal for you to be discriminated against on grounds of age. Theoretically you should have an equal standing with anybody else with the same qualifications and should get equivalent career progression. However, my department is fairly small and we haven't had any new people joining since the legislation came in so I don't know how well it will work in practice.
My personal opinion would be that if it's something you want to do, then go ahead and do it - and good luck. |

I dont think the NHS is in any way ageist
We have 2 students that are older than you
If you are good at your job you will have the same career progression as any other Radiographer (with ages come life skills so you may well do better than a student that starts at 1
hope this helps |

Yes, you should have the same career prospects as any younger radiographer under Agenda for Change- none !
Please think very carefully and find out how many people are leaving radiography rather than entering it.
In the current financial state of the NHS, specialization and progression are added costs which most trusts can no longer support. I would personally think that this is not a good career to move into now. |

As a newly qualified radiographer in three years time you probably wont think it's that bad, it might be a good time to join in some respects.
The comments made by broom are valid but only if you have been doing the job a few years - otherwise you wont notice. I'm in my final year and in the past three years have seen radiographers hours extend, 24 hour working introduced, various "extras" for unsociable hours removed, staffing levels reduced so departments are, imo, dangerously understaffed, etc, etc. If you had been doing the job for a while - as many people on this board have I would suspect, it's no wonder that you wouldn't be happy. However, if you are coming form outside the NHS you will find terms very agreeable compared to most commercial vacancies. Although things in the NHS are very, very different from the "real" world and the culture shock is great, trust me. |
