... what good sites (or areas- not necessarily specific sites) would you recommend and what is there to do around them?
We're new to the whole camping thing (brought our first family tent last weekend- DH has NEVER been camping in his entire life, I spent a childhood raised by hippies so did nothing but camp when the weather was with us) So, I'm starting to build a list of places we want to go and try, we're fairly active, like to have things to look around (anything from castles to sealife centres to science museums and forts or forests- anything that is interesting really), a nice beach doesn't necessarily have to be sandy for us, we like rockpools & crabbing, playin football & rounders, flying kites.
So, where do you go/recommend? _________________ Really is, Just Beka.

Whereabouts are you looking to go - I can recommend a fantastic site in north Devon - but I know that's miles and miles from you! (Warcombe Farm, in Morthoe, near Woolacombe, if you're interested!)

To be honest no where is really too far- we've realised we have the entirity of DH's career with him having at least some of the days in every school holiday the kids will have off work, and we've realised we've really not shown the children much of the country.
This year we're just looking to do a few 3 or 4 night stays whilst we get used to it but next year DH is considering a 3 week tour in the summer where we see as much as we can (there were mutterings that he's never been to Scotland.) _________________ Really is, Just Beka.

Filey, sandy beach, rockpools, nice parks, seaside-y kitsch-y but not too Blackpool-y. Handy for Scarborough and Bridlington and bits in between. Couple of basic-but-decent campsites just outside the town centre. _________________

Having a good browse through that site- thank you!
Trog it sounds well worth a trip up that way too- thanks.
I should mention, we do have to try and figure out how to put our tent up first should be interesting! _________________ Really is, Just Beka.

The East/North Yorks coast is awesome, Northumberland too, have been up as far as Edinburgh and that whole bit has good places all the way along, basically _________________

That's good to know- I think the furthest up I've ever travelled has been Great Yarmouth & Gorlestone (sp??) on the one side and Blackpool on the other (although technically probably south Wales for camping on that side- Blackpool was the only place further up the map than the midlands on the otherside but it was always bed and breakfast weekends. My parents were big fans of anything West of Southampton, and along the dorset/somerset/devon & cornwall area. _________________ Really is, Just Beka.

W've stayed here before and really liked it. What the review doesn't mention is that each pitch is seperated from the others by hedges may of fruit bushes and trees and you are free to pick your own.
There's an English Heritage Abbey across the road which is great for us because we are members.
We stayed because we had friends nearby and as a stop on the way to Cornwall so I'm not sure if there are activities nearby to suit your children but I'd recommend at as a great place to stop on a long journey.

Thanks for that- the idea of being separated sounds ideal!
Do you find you get your moneys worth out of EH membership? We've been looking at that and NT membership- not sure which to get or if both would work out well for us? (anyone with opinions on this they'd be gratefully received) _________________ Really is, Just Beka.

Another vote for the NE coast we offten visit Whitby and Robin hoods bay (no sand but cool rock pools) we camp a lot and my parents have a huge motor home so we use quite a lot of the sites. In fact you reminded me I need to book Whitby in August. _________________ [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/weight-loss/wxRiarq/]

We had a really lovely weekend camping on the Isle of Wight last year. If your attention spans are quite short you can do the whole island in a weekend, or stretch it out to a week if you like to spend a long time in each bit.
We've also done Cornwall - Hendra holiday park near newquay is great and has full on site facilities: clubs/activities/swimming pool etc. _________________

We like our EH membership, they lay on child friendly events and you get up to 6 children in free on your adult membership so you can take friends (car space allowing).
You don't have to go many times to get your membership back and David will qualify for a student membership which is a bargain.
