I've been humfing about modern life recently and realised that I sounded just like old people always have Shocked . Then I thought that maybe old people have a point and have decided to embrace my inner grumpy old lady. So here are my grumps about the modern world and how it used to be better:

1) I wanted to buy a bar of soap in the supermarket. I didn't want Imperial Leather (I'm not my mum, for crying out loud) just a nice bar of soap. The aisle was packed from end to end with containers of liquid soap and I really had to search for the tiny selection of soaps. What the hell is happening in the world when people are wasting money on liquid soap, which works out more expensive and has more packaging to dispose of? There's is nothing wrong with a bar of soap in a family home, it's served us perfectly well for generations. We don't all live in day centres or hospitals that have to be extremely careful about contamination, do we?

2) In the same supermarket I also wanted to buy a bog standard bayonet tungsten light bulb for our dining room, which has a dimmer switch and kills long life bulbs in less than a week. Guess what? Not a hope. It has been dictated on high that we all have to have long life bulbs even where it's patently unsuitable

3) We went into Clarkes in the sale to get some shoes for DD, and as she's seven we've decided she's old enough to learn to tie shoe laces. But what's this? Clarkes do not sell children's shoes that fasten with laces!! You read that correctly. So my daughter is growing up with a generation of children that will not be able to tie their shoe laces. Despite the fact that shoe laces ensure a far better fit than velcro or buckles and thus are essential in certain types of work shoe/boot, and despite the fact that shoes tied with shoe laces have a certain attractive look that will always come around into fashion again.

And before you tell me tha tI am being unreasonable and explain why, I don't care coz I am a grumpy old sod.

What are your grumps?

Roxy

I am the grumpiest person in the world, dont get me started on twats who drive on the phone, people who think the world owes them a living, or teenagers who think they are american gangsters. Just. Piss. Off.

Indicators and their use or rather lack of use.

I never thought I would be someone who sat there shouting in the car at other drivers but FFS, I'm not a mind reader. If you want to come into my lane INDICATE and I can let you in, don't just drive at the side of my car!

(I have lots more but really, I have to go to bed soon, I don't have long enough!)

One of my neighbours indicates at least a quarter of a mile before a turn off. Really confused me the first time I drove behind him. I've got him sussed now. Oh, and he never goes above 26 mph.

Grrr.

Roxy, do you not make your own soap anymore? We've got a good selection of soap available hereabouts, the Orkney Soap Co have a shop on the street (employment for folks with special needs) and there's a body shop too. I can post if you want.

I hadn't realised about laces. Kitty got a pair of Hello Kitty laces free in a mag the other week and has no lace-up shoes. I'd wondered about getting her a pair of lace-up gym shoes to put them in - wonder if you still get them.

D, you can still buy lace up shoes for children (e.g. Kickers) but Clarkes don't sell them which indicates a major trend to me. I haven't made any soap since I was pregnant with DS, partly because last time I got my scales out they weren't working and so I put them away again to check out later and 'later' hasn't happened yet. I really want to get back into it all though, I miss it as one of my creative outlets. We've just about cleared what I had kicking about hence I was buying a bar of soap. I have had soap from the company you mention, and in fact we have been in their lovely shop. I buy soap from here occasionally:

such as shaving soap (which I use myself)

That's funny as I have always seen trainers in Clarks with laces? Bought some for dd there just a couple of months ago. Maybe it's school shoes without...luckily for us her primary school loves kids in trainers as they spend a lot of outside sport time so I've never had to buy the "school shoes" and so never noticed.

I do remember at one primary school ds attended years ago , they said please do not use laces unless your child can do them up reasonably quickly otherwise the teacher would spend his life doing it for them!

My old woman grump is the amount of swearing in the street.

especially when I have my kids with me - and they can see them - and STILL swear! Evil or Very Mad

Non-indicators drive me mad too - my mum is one of them and I can't stand being a passenger when she is at the wheel - and she wonders why she is in so many accidents...

Oh yes, the Clarks not doing laces thing has driven me mad since Jayden learned to tie his laces when he was 6 or 7 and has only just grown into their lace up school shoes (they told me they only do them from size 2 and above) banghead No wonder kids don't know how to do them! Caleb and Reuben have some Converses so I really should get round to teaching them how to do laces.

I hate swearing too. Now I'm no angel and I do let the odd rude word slip if I've hurt myself or in a foul mood but I can't stand the F***ing every other word. To me it just shows a lack of intelligence! It's so common around the school though, so it's not like it's just teenagers, the parents are the worst!

Cyclists on the pavement. When we walk to school they are always on the pavements and I've been sworn and shouted at because I refuse to get out of their way with my pushchair and 4 other walking children (that would mean either jumping in a bush or onto a muddy verge) And there are cycle paths on the bloody road we walk down too! banghead

I completely avoid Clarks..... my eldest wears Kickers which have laces. Lochie has a pair of trainers with laces - mostly because his feet are an odd shape and the lady who fitted him said laces would provide a better for for him (had same advice from the same place for Iona)... so yeah, Clarks do not rock in this house.

Soap... I am a solid soap hater! I hate the way it sits on the side of the sink (or in a soap holder) often slimy, or full of dirt from whoever washed their hands last, and if you are in the bath, the way it slides out of your hands and vanishes under water..... When Torin started school, I went with him to the bathroom the first time, and he is a very good hands-washer after going to the loo. I asked him to wash his hands and he looked at me, puzzled..... and asked where the soap was! It was of course a solid bar, he had never seen one before! I do like nice smelling hand-made soap, but I just don't find it practical (I tend to buy it as a present for my mum who dislikes liquid soap)

Agree with you about liquid soap packaging though (we re-fill ours!)

Generally though I don't grump about much. The on-set of the World Cup though makes me grumpy.. I detest football in a big way (doesn't often bother me as DH isn't into it either).... I think all the England flags and *stuff* is tacky and irritating, (someone in our village has draped an England flag over the railway bridge, makes me Harumpf every time I drive past it, and hate all the football songs and the way the world stops when a match is on. Hate the way everyone assumes we all want to be a part of it (both at work and from the kids' school.. lots of football themed days/fund-raisers)... and everyone when they find out I am from Mnachester, want to know if I am Man U or Man City (NEITHER- I DON't GIVE A SHIT), and when we have travelled abroad and met foreign people they undertand where I from because they have heard of Man U.......

And I for me football has a big association with violence, binge drinking and people with more money than sense. Which is a shame because I am sure it's great for children to get into a sport and develop a skill for a game such as football. But I desperately hope none of my kids get into football.

But all else is cool in my world. Most things wash over me....

The whole molly coddling nanny state issue is probabaly what makes me grump the most...

Every year my daughters school has done a walk for the Primary 6 & & up a hill which is local to us. My daughter is in P6 this year and was looking forward to this class trip but it was cancelled at the last minute because no one had the necessary certificate which is now required to do that walk.
Our village bonfire was cancelled, again because no one had the right health and safety clearance.
The children at school are not allowed to play outdoors if it is wet/ snowy or icy. Since we are in NE Scotland this is the usual weather for the winter. Lucy has snow boots, a snow suit, hat, gloves etc but is still not allowed out to play!
The toothbrushing thing at Nursery. My children do not go to Nursery but if they did I would be opting out of this one. Yes it is useful for those children who do not get their teeth brushed at home but mine do, thanks.

Ugh, I could go one, I really am a grumpy old sod- everything in my own family is ine it is just interference from others that riles me!

Me too, I loathe it and all my favourite programmes will be cancelled or shifted to make way for flipping matches. I can't wait for it to be over. I don't do olympics either and I really don't want them to be in this country, it is costing far too much money. Why are they putting in a bid for the 2018 World cup to be here?
