I hated PE I hated games... I hated being hot and sweaty, I hated being cold, I hated changing in stinky changing rooms, I hated being shouted at by PE teachers who never bothered to learn the names of anyone who wasn't in the school teams.

However idid do exercise outside school, I did ballet until I was 15 and I swam and at Uni did loads of aerobics, then when I joined the RNR I did running, cos I had to, but hated it...back to be yelled at and being hot and sweaty and achy..

But only for a few years of my life have I not done any exercise at all.. So not put off for life

Not read the article but I loved PE at school (and chose to do standard grade and higher PE and extra sessions instead of craft/art things on games/activities afternoons) so probably can't really comment.

I can see though how some people (and not just girls) could hate it at school...not sure it would put them off for LIFE though.

I read the article, but nope it doesn't apply to me either!

One of the things I liked about PE at school was that at least it's something different every time. I've considered joining teams or clubs for things before but there isn't one sport I like enough to want to do the same thing every week.

I found it interesting what the article said about girls not liking their bodies being on show during PE. Maybe a re-think on uniforms and PE kits would help that?

it put me off hockey , netball and athletics, but I love Swimming , rounders , badminton/tennis..

Hmm guessing its generally team sports i got put off -lol
for me it was the lack of pe that i liked. Hockey , netball, cross country running and athletics was the compuslory sports.
Sometimes we were allowed to play rounders etc in the summer. If you didn't like those sports then there was little to enjoy.

I think things have changed - at least at my childrnes school and they do lots more different sports so hopefully childrne will find something they like?

DD's school let the girls wear tracksuits so that takes the pe kit argument out at her school.

I think the kit argumaent doesn't apply anymore. DH and I have been discussing this at length, I think tat many girls find team sports unappealing, u like boys who have that edge of aggression. Also the not being good at soemthing really matters in sports where you will be last/loose the game. Also I r,ever feeling. Ery emotionally fragile about everything and being last, shouted at etc was just the end of the rope..

I was at an all girls school from 13, there was a clear divide between the sporty ones and the not sporty ones and you couln't reallycross it, I was good at athletics but was never regarded as sporty because I wa no good at hockey
..

But I realldon't get the put off for life bit, once you leave school you're free to explore what you like to do

*hated* PE at school. But I went to Air Cadets and didn't mind PT there, though it wasn't high on my list of things I liked! Actually felt like I got a workout there though, PE at school was so disorganised and dull.
I do think the kit also played a part in it - at cadets it was just jogging bottoms and a t-shirt, at school it was tiny PE skirts and no shorts allowed underneath - our PE teacher used to lift up skirts at the beginning of lessons to check sometimes.

I was also the kind of kid that climbed trees as a teenager, and went swimming quite often. I'd go through phases of situps and pushups in the morning and went mountain walking with cadets.

Once out of school age it all pretty much flopped though. I'd do exercise DVDs and I've always walked a fair bit but that was it really. Running helped me to claw back that it feels good to feel fit, but even now I fight it quite a bit. Well, loads right now TBH Very Happy

I can see school PE putting girls off for life. I think you have some people that like to be fit and some not so much. The latter will be put off when they could be motivated to find what kind of physical exercise works for them IMO.

We had gigantic knickers to wear under our skirts..

But Shocked At for it being checked, what's that about? maybe PE teachers put girls off PE for life!

We had PE knickers too!

What did I hate? Some of it is what I still hate - getting hot and sweaty and red in the face. Being crap at most things, other than dance and gymnastics (and being the wrong shape for that). Not being able to stay after school for clubs.

The worst though was the time - it was always such a rush - getting changed (communal rooms too) then out and never enough time to get changed afterwards. No time for a proper shower (even if they worked/had privacy) so being hot/sweaty all day. Being out in the cold and wet.....

It was the showers at school PE that put me off doing it while there. Huge communal things that the PE teacher used to stand at the end of to make sure that we at least ran through it and got wet. We had no choice at all to opt out even if our parents wrote in.

I loved the lessons but would avoid them because of the showers that followed.

Luckily not been put off for life but it certainly put me off for a while.

It was the showers I hated the most! They don't insist at the school my 2 are at - they are available but nobody uses them apparently.

I loved PE! We played hockey, rounders, netball, lacrosse, and we also did running/athletics depending on the season.
