What cars did you drool over and what cars did you actually own in the 80's?
I used to think Opal Mantas were the bees knees - far removed from my Vauxhall Chevette hatchback in regatta blue (reg LHD 595W) but I still loved it and cried when I part exchanged the old "shove-it". We later got a brand new Vauxhall Astra (J551 GCP) in 1992 and we had it delivered the night before the J-reg cars actually came out.
I once went away for the weekend to my friend's caravan in her dad's new Cortina and I threw up in it That new vinyl smell in cars never did me any good.
I've never really had a flashy car to drive, the best I ever managed was a brand new Nissan Primera and a new Nissan X-trail as courtesy cars when my Terrano was poorly, but this has only been in recent years. |

We had Rovers, a couple of the P6 ones and they are a stunning car, one was a 3.5 V8, he was a beauty but dad rolled it and we were all heartbroken. He replaced it with another, not as nice imo, then got one of the SD1 models, another fab piece of design but not the most reliable car

We always had Rovers growing up, my stepdad was a mechanic and built a very snazzy V8 engine for one. _________________

Not sure I think any 80s cars are particulary sexy although I have had sex in quite a few in the 80s.
I got my first car in 1990 and it was a T reg (as in 1977) beige Ford Fiesta with brown checked nylon interior and a 995cc engine. Couldn't get much less sexy if I tried.

Jaguars...sexy in every decade!!!
We had aa Austin Princess, awful yellow colour.
My ex took it to bits to fix the engine, then drove it to the MoT station without tightening the bolts and the car was subsequently totalled when the engine fell out...
Then had a revolting Datsun Estate which rusted through, my ex bought it after looking at it through a wire fence from across a field...
Then a Citroen C8, which was gooorgeous, but odd-looking. (I drove it across a roundabout once whilst learning to drive )
Then a Vauxhall Cavalier hatchback, which wasn't a bad car, really, until my ex put fake bullet holes all over and one of those thingys that's makes machine gun noises oon the dashboard...
The - I got a job! And got myown lovely cavalier CDi (2 litre) which went like muck off a shovel, but was totalled by some twit several years on...
Have to say, when I was divorced, that car came with me, and it saw a lot of action when I met dh... .
Ahhh, those were the days.

I have never been a big car fan, but when we were growing up both my Dad and Grandad (his dad) had Princesses. I thought they were fantastic! _________________ SAHM to Isla (10), Harvey(9), Callum (7) and Daisy (5)

Yep, agree with Rodders on this one, Jags are good in any decade.
I also have a VW Scirocco from that era......lovely car, cheap to run and easy to fix. Oh, and now pimped with a leather interior!

I won't tell you what I actually drove in the 80s as it was all rubbish!
Oh...except for the Sierra XR4x4 I bought when we moved to Germany...now THAT was lovely!

I learned to drive in my Mum's Austin Allegro, Dad's Vauxhall Avenger and later her Mini.I passed my test in 1982 and shortly after bought a 1975 Mini. I traded it in a year later for a Datsun Cherry, then sold that to buy a carpet for our new house in 1985. I had enough left over for a Honda 90 step through motorbike!
In 1986 we bought a Mk1 Ford XR2, now I really loved that car. It was later traded in for our first new car, an F Reg special edition Escort XR3i. We kept this until we had saved enough for my all time favourite car, a brand new Ferrari red TVR S3. This was my pride and joy until DH went to work in it one day then rang me to ask for a lift home. He'd sold the car to a dealer on the spot. (We had talked about selling as I was pg and it was only a 2 seater, but I was still heartbroken) He adored the 2 seater! Caterham 7 he replaced it with, I had to make do with a very serviceable but boring Escort Estate, boohoo.
I think my dream car in the early eighties was a Porsche 911.
The eighties were a busy time for us carwise. Between us we also had a Talbot Sunbeam Trio and a Mini Clubman which we rebuilt. That was sold to a friend a few weeks after completion. He wrote it off on his second journey! _________________
