There must be something you wore which you don't think of as cringeworthy.
Things I loved wearing were my purple suede chelsea boots which had very, very pointy toes and stilletto heels. Bought them from Schuh when it opened a branch in Aberdeen. I also had numerous pairs of witchy boots, that is mid-calf lace-ups with little heels, usually suede but I think I had a pair of snakeskin effect ones too.
Ripped, faded Levis with pink fishnets underneath
Wide elastic belts with poppers or zip fasteners on the front
Black dresses or skirts with odd coloured stockings on legs (one leg red and one yellow, or one orange, one green etc)
I also had a few pairs of trousers which my friend kindly labelled "shite-catchers". Think MC Hammer. My favourite ones were black with purple batik designs on them bought from a streetmarket in Amsterdam in 1988. Worn til they fell apart.

I was too small and made to wear cringeworthy little girl sailer style outfits and worse by my mum
But I adored the off the shoulder t-shirts - we all used to walk around the playground tugging at our tops and widening the necks I still love the look Madonna had, with the fingerless lace gloves, necklaces, denim skirts and fishnets etc I'd wear this now given the oppertunity! _________________ Proud owner of: Edward Cullen, Friends, Lost, Ben and Jerrys

loads of things - but then I was a fashion student for most of the Eighties (and employed in the biz for the rest) so I suppose I couldn't help it! I loved the Kings Road and Kensington Market (one of my BFs had a collection there) and Joseph, Warehouse and Miss Selfridge were my favourite haunts. I made loads of my own clothes too, especially as being in Nottingham there were so many fabric shops then - plus amazing vintage clothes shops. There was plenty of tasteful clothing in the 80s - it wasn't all day glo and big shoulders. I spent most of the time in short black skirts, woolly black tights and big lace up boots! My favourite outfits were all vintage stuff though. I have a few rather lovely corset tops that I'll never fit into again but are too nice to get rid of!

My fav came from Tammy Girl!!! (Remember them?) It was a bright cerise pink silky shirt with 3/4 length sleeves and a nice brooch at the neck (Plastic and pink of course!) which I wore with a short flared high waisted black skirt with cerise pink spots and a pair of cerise pink tights underneath!!! This outfit was topped off with loafers (al la Bros stylee!)
I also had a blue wool A-line skirt which was as itchy as hell, but had to be worn with my blue rugby style top with black polka dots!!
Oh and I LURVED my plastic bow clip with polka dots that I wore in my bum length ringletted hair!!!
Princess Diana had a lot to answer for with her polka dots!!!! _________________ There is a secret in our culture – it’s not that birth is painful, it’s that women are strong. (Laura Stavoe Harm) |

I loved my multi coloured ra-ra skirt. I also had one of those plastic basket looking bags which everyone at my school had (can you tell it wasn't posh )

Vintage clothes, now you're talking.
I still have a couple of pieces I bought in the 80s and 90s.
I have a black velvet jacket which I think is probably Victorian or Edwardian. It has a gathered bit at the back for a bustle, a very high neck and gigot sleeves. The fabric is sooo lush, feels nothing like modern day velvet. I wonder if it's made from silk rather than cotton. No idea if I can still shoe-horn myself into it or not. I used to wear it a lot and it always changed my posture - had to carry myself very upright.
Also have a grey wool coat, post-war I think. Wide shawl collar, fitted top and wide swishy skirt, lovely sparkly marcasite buttons. It is my posh winter coat which gets an outing about once a year.
Have had quite a few camisoles and petticoats over the years but they have all disintegrated on me.
