Food from a bye-gone era

OK, what meals or foods do you associate with particular periods.

I'm remembering eating a lot of vesta currys and Angels Delight in the 70s, washed down with Cremola Foam. I recall people going to have things "in a basket" as pub meals but wasn't old enough to be allowed in so have never actually witnessed this.

Prawn cocktail and Black Forest Gateau seemed to be the height of sophistication in the 80s (and this lingered into the 90s in dh's family)

The 90s probably merge into now as it's not that long ago (well in my mind anyway ) but I'm thinking sundried tomatoes, foccacia and things with coconut and lime as flavourings.

What foods do you associate with your childhood, teenagerhood or whatever.

Growing up in the 70's/80s I remember...

Angel Delight ...had a bit of a pang for them & bought some last week . Mum says it was the only way she could get me to have milk (I still hate it to this day)...no wonder I have a sweet tooth

...oh & the old style special K that Mum always had for breakfast - much much nicer than the flakes we get these days.

Ooooh yes, def. Vesta chow mein with crispy noodles and Angel Delight too. There was also an alternative to Angel Delight in the form of Instant Whip... and tinned peaches/pears/fruit cocktail with evaporated milk.

I hated spam but like 'spiced pork' which you got in slices from our local corner shop

Smash - we never used to have it (but maybe we did at school??) but I loved the adverts....

Ah those were the highly coloured, dodgy additive, over-processed days....

Pacers, Treats, Galaxy Counters, Marathons, Spangles, Opal Fruits, 4x Mojos for 1p, 10p mix-up, Quattro, Squirt - all remind me of my childhood (& they're all sweets/fizzy drinks!). I remember Vesta curries but they were always deemed 'too spicy' for children by my mum!

Micro-chips (bleughh!) came out when I was a teenager & I ate many, many boxes of them (not sure I ever had one decent chip though!).

Oh - Arctic Roll! Was always dessert when my grandparents visited, served with lashings of evaporated milk. And then Vienetta icecream - ugh!

I remember when Matchsticks were short & came in variety boxes of 3 flavours (orange, mint, coffee), separated poorly so that you always got a rogue Matchstick in your favourite compartment(!) & when Twiglets were long (about 5" or so).

There are loads of things I can remember eating then which I no longer do, but I'm not sure if it's because I'm vegetarian now & wasn't then (thinking tinned corned beef, tinned salmon, spam, crab) & far more ingredients aware, & I generally only look for what I'm after iykwim so don't see all that's on offer, & have no idea if half the stuff I ate back then is still available or not!

Oh now i will really be the odd kid again, we had stuff like junket (milk jelly flavoured with nutmeg), carob bars, liquorice woods, goats milk , brewers yeast, rabbit stew, barley cup (which I have just found locally) and something which the name escapes me. It was like green bovril, veg/seaweed based?

Very occasionally Mum and Dad took me for pub lunches when we would have meals in baskets. The baskets were disappointingly plastic . The most memorable was scampi in a basket that I had in Stromness, I spent the night puking in the B&B we were staying in prior to catching the ferry home - much to my mums embarrasment.

I also remember gammon and pineapple being the epitome of taste.

I used to hate Angel delight, could never see the attraction, likewise smash.

I also remember vegetables being cooked in a pressure cooker, why?

Lemon Meringue! My parents seemed to have that for pudding ALL the time in the 80's! I also remember pub basket meals with fondness!
Oh and mustard and cress as a garnish on EVERYTHING!! Another 80's classic!

Yup the lemon meringue you got as a Greens kit, the lemon flavour was a ball thing you melted in the milk.

And I have remembered the name of the green stuff, it was Vecon.

heinz salad cream, tinned salmon (very rarely as a treat), spagetti hoops on toast,tinned fruit salad with nestle cream,a pineapple once a year on boxing day, white pepper -never black, packet trifles..can't remember the name, stews, rabbit pies(!) made by my mum (with my dad always telling how he used to break the rabbits neck as preperation as a child)...proper nice cream soda in bottles with money back when you returned them.

Born in 1980 I remember Angel Delight - I think I was a member of the Angel Delight Club..?
Also Actic Rolls, mmmm I Loved them With custard at school! We also had a kind of treacle tray cake - pastry or biscuit bottom with treacle on the top and they would cut it in to squares for us.
I remember loads of sweeties from the 80's, all far better than what we get now

90's makes me think of staying over at my friends' houses for 'video nights' where we ate lots of TUC and Ritz biscuits, drank loads of Coke (had to be the real thing ) and Tomtoms, the puffed corn kind of crisps. And Vienetta, which was dissapointing really when I finally had some.

Rola cola! I do remember when peanut butter hit the shelves, sun pat. Having fruit cocktail with tip top for pud. Dripping on bread with loads of salt on (heart attack sandwich or what)
