INTERVIEW-Exiled Iranian opponent urges tough sanctions
Reuters - The West has failed in a policy of “appeasement” with Iran over its nuclear programme and must hit Tehran with tough economic and diplomatic sanctions, the leader of an exiled opposition group said on Tuesday.
Maryam Rajavi, head of the France-based National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), said Europe's acknowledgement this month of the collapse of efforts to bring Tehran to the negotiating table should trigger new harder tactics.
“The policy of appeasement has reached an impasse,” she said in an interview after a meeting with Belgian parliamentarians.
“There must now be a decision for a policy of toughness -- to impose embargoes on arms, oil, technology and diplomatic contacts,” she told Reuters.
Iran, Hezbollah charged in 1994 Argentine bombing
BUENOS AIRES, Oct 25, 2006 (AFP) - Prosecutors formally charged Iran and the Shiite militia Hezbollah Wednesday in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish charities office in Argentina, which killed 85 people and injured 300.
"We deem it proven that the decision to carry out an attack July 18, 1994 on the AMIA (Argentine Jewish Mutual Association, a Jewish charities association headquarters in Buenos Aires) was made by the highest authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran which directed Hezbollah to carry out the attack," Argentine chief prosecutor Alberto Nisman said.
Prosecutors called for the arrest of top Iranian authorities at the time, including then-president Ali Rafsanjani.
The war on the airwaves continues in Iran
U.S. blames Iran, Syria for Iraq violence
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - America's civilian and military leaders in Iraq linked Iran and Syria with al Qaeda on Tuesday as forces trying to tear the country apart and prevent the United States from establishing a stable democracy.
Ahmadinejad does Europe
The Wall Street Journal, REVIEW & OUTLOOK - Whatever Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's other faults, lack of candor isn't one of them. This week the U.N. Security Council is set to begin discussing the imposition of (very) limited sanctions against Iran for refusing to halt uranium enrichment to build a nuclear weapon.
