hi all
new member on here and have applied to do Radiography at the grand old age of 40!
have need of advice and hand holding!! i hate physics and really am tearing my hair out as to how i am going to get over my loathing of a god awful boring subject.
i quit uni last time because of problems and my loathing of physics which i found really hard.
how do i get over this blockage and begin to like the stuff?
any advice would be most appreciated!
cheers irene _________________ 'blue skies are always somewhere else' |

Hi Irene! I have done the same in the past, left uni cos of the physics (and homesickness but hey ho!!).
Am now in my first year of radiography and on my booklist was a book called 'Essential Physics for Radiographers' by John Ball and Adrian Moore.
I have found this book really helpful as have others on my course.
I hope this helps. Good luck, and give it your best shot. Remember the lecturers will be willing to help if you get stuck!! xx |

Welcome to the forums Blu
I recommend the book posted above as well and this link to another thread where you will see that you are not alone:

thanks guys!
have got the 'book' already just never got around to opening the cover!
i suppose i will have to grit my teeth and get over my dislike of physics.
i'm not in yet but who knows, maybe this time next year i'll be over the first 6 months and lovin it!!!
cheers

Forget it's physics. Invent a new subject called radiation science and think of it as that! _________________ Eagles may soar,

I had a bit of a nightmare with my immunology and pharmacology module hated it, didn't see the point, it was dull and boring. I found that i needed to find the magic in the subject; find something that really impressed me or filled a gap in my everyday knowledge and that would spark my interest.
For immunology it was the shear lengths that my body goes to to defend itself, i could imagine myself being ill and then picture everything my body was doing to recover and why i feel like i do when i'm ill is often down to my immune system rather than the bug itself.
I love physics it is the most important subject of them all in all circumstances, think of it as the glue that holds the universe together, how can you truely know about anything with out knowing why it behaves like it does.
I guess my message is to embrace the subject (any subject) and look for something in it which is majestic. Physics for me is almost religous the more i know (and the more i realsie that i don't know) just makes me marvel at the complxity of the universe. The fact that radioactive phenomena have been going on for so long without our knowledge is really cool and now we have learnt enough to observe and understand.
Maybe i sound like a hippy but i'm saying that everything is interesting if you can find how it fits your own lifestyle. |

| I really like physics, I did my first degree in it. I'm having more trouble with the anatomy and physiology side of things, but I'm starting to get it. If anyone gets really stuck on anything physics-y, put a message about it on here or email me and I'll do my best to answer it. |

|

It seems like years ago now, my colleague and I sat down and started to design a piece of computer software that could show students how the controls on an x-ray machine affected the radiation coming out of the tube.
Our aim was to try and avoid any 'physics'. and supply a real time moving graphical output.
It took us about 2 years in the end - and last weekend it was finally finished!
You can now download the free 15 day trial (it's called TechnicVR) It is as easy to use as an x-ray console. Early versions of this software is in use in some Schools of Radiography. Check it out at http://www.shaderware.com/live/downloads.html and scroll down the page to see what is available.
Regards

That physic's link above is awesome!
Thank you.
Physics can always be challenging because for many of us it is so abstract and all the formulas can screw with your head a little.
Some love it though...
Hope it all went well and post on here if you have any specific questions. |

| Physics deals with the study of matter and its motion through space time and all that derives from these, such as energy and force. It covers a wide range of phenomena, from the smallest sub-atomic particles, to the largest galaxies. Sometimes it becomes very much complicated. We need to connect the things we see around us to root causes, and then to try to connect these causes together in the hope of finding an ultimate reason for why nature is as it is. Very much confusing..... |
