EXCERPTSSULAIMANIYAH, Iraq: Iranian helicopters attacked three Iraqi Kurdish
villages in a cross-border raid yesterday, a border guard official said, the
first time Iran has used aircraft against Kurdish rebels.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.. . ."This is the first time
they have used helicopters." . . .The raids came a week after 26 people
were killed in a fierce gunbattle between Iranian police and Kurdish rebels
near the Iraqi border, but it was not immediately clear if the events were
linked.
. . ..Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey all have significant ethnic Kurdish
minorities.
Under Saddam Hussein's regime, Tehran and Baghdad fought a devastating
1980-1988 war in which around one million people died.
Relations between Baghdad and Tehran have warmed considerably since the 2003
overthrow of Saddam by US-led forces.
