Many of you have probably heard me complaining about my ping going higher and higher as the night time approaches. It's good till about 5pm. Then steadily rises to 150-200 until about 9pm. Then steadily goes back to normal.
Now I know back in the old dial-up days that was all normal as people get home from work at generally the same time and hop on the internet, fighting connection, and possibly getting boated. But is this a normal thing to happen with high speed internet?
I don't know if it's my router or what. My network is "secured" so I don't think my neighbors are milking my connection.
If my ping would stay at a steady something I would be happy. But jumping all over the place makes it very tough to compensate for.
I've tried rebooting the puter and the modem and the router...and not sure what else to do because I R STUPID!
I hope all of this makes sense. Any feedback posted as if explaining to an 8 year old is appreciated!! |

Sorry I'm of no help Rams, but I have similar problem, except my ping doesnt vary much, but has steadily increased on all servers in last few months. I hope someone can chime in with some info. I used to run 30-50 ping on the penguin,kt, and several other servers. Now, the lowest ping I get on any server on the master list is never below 60, and most servers that I play on are around 130-200 and the rest on the list are 300+. Maybe my cable company is just slowly sticking it to me, but when I run ping test from cmd-dos, I generally ping the 12ms like I always have. I know the hp server and kt both moved, but for all the servers on master list except maybe 2 or 3 to double is just strange to me. Rams , I too am computer stupid. Geeks , help us computer stupid people!! _________________

Rams it's probably your wife hacking in to make you finally go to bed
Well, there could be a few reasons for this - first I'd recommend a virus and spyware scan - it always helps more or less.
Now I'd need to know how do you connect to the router - is it wireless or wired?
The most probable reason for this is your ISP or the router (if it's wireless), but still there's a lot of tests needed to come to a short list of possible reasons.
per the ping raising when people join the server - it really is that way, but not like 16 people on the serv and you have 50ping and 18 people you get 80ping - no way - the differences affect everyone and they are little +/-10
Winshit could also be a problem here - if you had your windows installed ages ago you might want to reinstall it but it is higher than the 8-year old exercise
Let me know what type of router u have and I'll post some more info |

I use a Linkseys w/speedbooster. But my desktop is wired straight from the back of it. I have never done anything with any settings with this. Just hooked it up and ran with it the way it came.
I use AVG 8.0 anti virus and AVG 7.5 anti spy. And I do a regular scan of both at least once a week. Also use a program called Defender Pro which I use only for cleaning registry, temp files, cookies, and such things. I also do this once a week.
The desktop I use only for gaming...no web surfing or anything. I usually do all that with the laptop in my chair which is wireless.
I also shut down everything when I game including my AVG's and usually leave everything off until I run my scans.
And the puter is maybe 4 years old. But it's a good one. I ran Crysis with little problems except for the mp part of it.
I thank you very much for helping with this Exxon!! I hope I answered most of the questions you needed answers for. |

It's likely to be your isp. "High Speed" Broadband lines are still affected by people coming home and switching on.
When you sign up for BB most home users "unwittingly" agree to 50:1 contention, that means there "can" be up to 50 people using the same line to the exchange. Increased ping is an increase in the latency (time it takes for your packets to travel §) but only way round it is phone your isp and tell them your connection has decreased and hope they do something.
I've had improvements in my home line but only since IrishBroadBand merged with some other company, when they phoned me asking if i'd any problems lol <---this behaviour is erratic and not liely to happen again until the dusk of time.
You can run traceroutes to your game servers at "fast" times of the day and then some when slow and cut/paste from console into email and send them proof but you'd need a helpdesk email address, you might get one on their website or by ringing them.

They should ask you to test it most likely trying traceroutes.
Depending what windows you have will depend on what command you use but it'll be something like
tracert <ip or domain name>
traceroute <ip or domain name>
if you don't want to se console there are sites which claim to do it for you. _________________ Each and every one of us continues to live either by the merciful sufferance of a God or at the whim of blind chance and indifferent nature. <Dean Koontz> |

A way to make sure it's noone tapping your line which i doubt is when the connection gets slow, switch router off and wait 10-15 seconds, switch back on, check pings and if they got better for a while, either someone is using your network and was disconnected when you restarted the router or your router is faulty
I think it won't change though, think it's the isp :S _________________ Each and every one of us continues to live either by the merciful sufferance of a God or at the whim of blind chance and indifferent nature. <Dean Koontz> |

Well funny you say this Sav because often when I go to my desktop, I have no connection to the internet. So what I have to do is unplug the router, wait about 30sec, then plug it back in and all is fine. I almost have to do this once a day.
And I had already tried to uninstall the router and all the settings and reinstall it but I still have the same issues.
But the ping thing only happens at night. It's like clockwork!!
So I guess I have not one issue but two lol! |

My router used to drop frequently, strangely enough when i got in from work i'd have to restart it too.
I put this down to a crappy isp network causing signal loss throughout the day tripping the router, sounds like you have the same problem i did. _________________ Each and every one of us continues to live either by the merciful sufferance of a God or at the whim of blind chance and indifferent nature. <Dean Koontz> |

This is my second router in two years.
If I could find another high speed internet provider in the area, I would leave this one in a second. But Charter kinda has the monopoly here. And most likely why I am having these problems because everyone else has Charter. |
