EXCERPTS:BEIRUT: Israeli drug police have arrested four people attempting to smuggle in heroin from Lebanon, media reports said on Saturday(& March).
Israeli police arrested the four "Galilee residents" in possession of 4.5
kilograms of Lebanese heroin, which police said had a street value of around $950,000, the YNetnews website claimed. "The alleged smugglers were apprehended ... in a stakeout that began Friday at 11 a.m., when a Lebanese citizen was seen throwing the package of heroin over the border fence.". . .

The police chief said his unit had seized some 30 kilograms of heroin along
the Lebanese border since the beginning of 2009.

Lebanon was one of the world's major heroin and hashish producers,
especially during the country's tumultuous 1975-90 Civil War. Although the
Lebanese authorities have made considerable efforts to stamp out the trade since the conflict ended, Israel has repeatedly accused Hizbullah of drug peddling in return for intelligence about the Jewish state.
