EXCERPTS:
BEIRUT, 23 September 2006 - Hezbollah chief Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah made his
first public appearance since the war with Israel at a huge "victory" rally
here yesterday, rejecting calls to disarm and saying his group still had
20,000 rockets.
Nasrallah, 46, emerged from more than two months in hiding to address a
rapturous crowd.... which his Lebanese Shiite Muslim militia said numbered
in the hundreds of thousands.. . .
. . .One of Israel's stated aims in the offensive which ended in
mid-August was to eliminate Hezbollah's capacity to fire rockets, thousands
of which were launched at the Jewish state during the conflict, killing
dozens of civilians.
UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which halted the war, demands the
disarmament of all militias in Lebanon. But Nasrallah said his movement would
not give up its weapons ... .
In Israel, a senior Israeli official dismissed Nasrallah's victory claims as
"ridiculous." "That's a ridiculous claim coming from a man who was forced to
go into hiding again after his speech," ... Prime Minister Fuad Siniora has
rejected Hezbollah calls for a government change and stopped short of
declaring a victory, after a war which cost Lebanon billions of dollars on
top of more than 1,200 deaths. Beirut's political scene has witnessed sharp
political disputes since Israel's devastating offensive.. . .

Starts",Agencies
QUOTE FROM TEXT:The mayors from Turkey's largest Kurdish party are charged
... with 'knowingly and willingly' helping Kurdish rebels"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXCERPTS:
DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, 27 September 2006 - Fifty-six Kurdish mayors went on
trial yesterday over a letter they sent to Denmark's prime minister in a
case that has raised concerns in the European Union. The mayors from Turkey's
largest Kurdish party are charged by state prosecutors with "knowingly and
willingly" helping Kurdish rebels when they urged Prime Minister Anders Fogh
Rasmussen not to close Danish-based Kurdish broadcaster Roj TV.
The members of the Democratic Society Party (DTP), which champions Kurdish
rights, face up to 15 years in jail if convicted of the charges. Forty-five
of the mayors attended the court yesterday. Ankara accused Roj TV of being a
mouthpiece of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which took up arms
against the Turkish state in 1984 with the aim of carving out an ethnic
homeland in the southeast.
Rasmussen said in June that putting the mayors on trial over the letter
contravened the values of the EU, which Turkey hopes to join.. . .
