The commonly accepted etymology derives warlock from the Old English wǣrloga meaning deceiver, or "oathbreaker". A derivation from the Old Norse varš-lokkur, "caller of spirits" has also been suggested however the Oxford English Dictionary considers this etymology inadmissible.
