Spawned from a completely unrelated post on the Armour Archive, but I personally know at least one woman with this attitude and I don't get it.

Quote:
On the other hand, our SCA group has had a compule "influential" women over the years who make it a point to aim for the cup. Shocked Maybe we're over-reacting on the cup part, but I'm okay with that.

Why are these women targeting the harbles on purpose? That just seems like a really mean spirited thing to do. Confused There is one woman locally who doesn't fight much anymore but used to be Adria and is now in my SCA group full time. Granted she's difficult to deal with just normally but she regularly used to target 'the boys'. And the first female heavy fighter I ever met (who also doesn't fight anymore but for health reasons) did the same thing.

I've run into that mindset before though not recently and not in Atlantia. In the case I can remember well, it seemed to be mostly a last ditch degree of frustration with not being able to get a good kill otherwise. Also I think there is a degree of acceptance of abusing men there in the popular culture which is bad. (It doesn't *just* make them curl up into a cute moaning ball. It really, really hurts, and occasionally does require medical attention. We had a guy locally who needed emergency surgery last fall.)

I think for the most part these women are really trading on the notion that the guys are too nice to give it back to them.

Post me the link to that thread, please.

I have targeted the inside thigh in the past (btw - the groin was a perfectly legal target in the past, and in some kingdoms, still is), but it has been as Cunian says - only in cases of truly aggreggious blow acknowledgement issues. I will start by targeting the armpit, and work my way up from there.

Bri.

It's in this thread of all places:

http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=117278

Like I said, completely unrelated to the topic but I've encountered the attitude myself several times and I just don't get it.

I suspect it develops from calibration issues. When I had difficulty in the past with powering a shot, my targeting was limited to those places I could hit that hurt like hell. I didn't go for the balls, but I did go for a face thrust, neck, unarmoured parts of the upper arm, underarm, unarmoured back of the torso, back of the leg, butt, point of the hip, and inside the thigh. It was a way to play while my power developed.

It's not my practice to target the groin, but it is a legal target here. Usually, if I know my shot is accidently headed there, I will pull the blow as much as possible. For a while when I was fighting my knight irregularly, who was shorter than my other opponents, when I would go for the inside of the leg shot, I would accidently groin shot him. It was horrible.

I have intentionally cup shot an individual once or twice. But that was only in the case of absolutely horrible laugh in his face shrugging. It was my desire to discourage him from seeking me out again.

As I read that thread, it appears to be in rapier stuff, where there shouldn't be a big difficulty with someone calling things light. Dunno.

I go for 'white meat' shots a lot just as a matter of course, and accidents do happen. In the instances where I have been nervous that a gut thrust or an inside thigh shot was off target and have pulled them, people have typically told me not to have pulled the shot, though some are happy.

If it is rapier then, does it hurt?
If it's not painful, then maybe that's some kind of funny?
I don't pretend to understand rapier.

Well, both the women I was referring to were heavy fighters.

I think it's dirty pool. Just plain ol' not cool. Sometimes I miss and tag one of my friends, but it is an accident that I apologize for. The only time I had acknowledgement issues with someone, I saluted them and yielded the field. Someone talked to them about it, they apologized and all was right with the world.

Honor and reputation mean way way more to me than an ugly victory ever could.

Generally, I only go for the lads if my life is really in the balance. All bets are off in that case.

I am a fencer from the Outlands (8 years) who is a month-old newbie at heavy fighting. I do note that shots to the groin are strongly discouraged in heavy with a few caveats - that sometimes that is the only shot particular people will take and that it should always be laid lightly. There are good reasons for this - shots are really, really hard with this sport.

Light fighting is an entirely different story. Shots there are encouraged as any other target, with the assumption that if you get hit there abnormally often, you are probably being a twit to your opponent or doing something stupid. There is a large difference - light fighting (in the Outlands) is done to lightest possible touch (there are some kingdoms that do positive pressure, which is still much, much lighter than the heavies hit). If you felt it, it was good. If you saw it come in where it should have hit, but didn't feel it, you might still take it assuming that you just are too thickly armored there. If the shot left a bruise it was likely excessive or something abnormal happened. So no - not painful, although likely surprising to someone not used to it.

Last year at Pennsic 38 I encountered a female knight who was teaching other women to aim for the cup shot. I do not know who she was, but was so disgusted, I walked away fuming.

In my opinion, this is not only wrong, but stupid. Sure a cup shot will hurt like hell. What a lot of women don't realize is that a cup shot will drop some men to the ground and other men it'll put into a heated rage. If they're having problems getting a man to take a shot, it's not a good idea to make that man angry!

I agree with what someone else said: if you can't get them to take a shot, aim for the squishy bits like the armpit, or in between the armor. You can also aim for the bits where people are supposed to take pretty lightly like neck shots or face thrusts.

I am currently trying to amp up my power and do not currently have the aim to hit small areas like the neck or armpit anyway!

Because then you'd get someone like UberDuke So and So, leader of a large household, telling everyone that you're rhino-hiding. Now he and all of his cronies will be clubbing you like a baby seal. If that's your idea of fun in the SCA, go for it! Just remember that singling you out as a jerk is not being treated equally, it's the same way they'd treat ANYONE who decides to fight unchivalrously.

If a guy can't get hit in the groin without flying into a hot red rage he shouldn't be on the field anyway. Accidental groin shots happen.

Does that happen where you are?
