Apart from your clothing and your name, how important is your persona in the SCA? How often does it come into play? _________________ Opinions? Great! Flames? Oh well. I probably deserve it. |

Mine never really comes into play. Mostly because I haven't ever really developed much of one and I like to wear a variety of different styles from different periods. |

| Not at all, really. My persona lends me a fondness for early period anglo/scandanavian stuff and little more. I tend to base my stuff around it when convenient, but I get completely inappropriate enthusiasms that I have no interest in stifling. |

Well, some people, their game is to be all consistent and to figure out ways to do the standard SCA stuff - garb, armor, tent and camp stuff, etc - so that it all goes together and get into depth about their background and time period. I can appreciate it. I don't need the extra challenge, frankly. (My extra challenge is fitting 4 people, 3 sets of armor, 2 small pavillions and stuff for 10 days into our car that is mostly full just going to fighter practice.) And I am not so focused on one time/place that I want to ignore all others. And I am not so rich that I can afford multiple sets of stuff for multiple personea, which is what a lot of these guys do.
The thing in the SCA is all of us are kind of playing our own game with ourselves as well as an overall game with everyone else. People sometimes get hung up that their personally-defined game is not the common game, but thems the breaks. One gets that most with the 14th century guys, because their stuff works easily for the SCA fighter game, and is pretty SCA standard and easily available generally. |

Sometimes, not even the clothes. It can get too hot to wear a Turban.

| I'm trying to make my armor consistent, but that's about it at the moment. |

Hmm. Well, I have three main personas:
C7 Anglian (for war fighting)
C13 Franciscan
C14 Anglo-German (for tourneys)
I always try to be consistent with clothing, armour and feast gear for each, but I am not there yet. The Franciscan is easy because low-end equipment (bowls etc) did not change much from the Anglian stuff. My tent (still a prototype) works with all periods.
But I would never, for example, wear the Anglian helm with my C14 breastplate. |

I in theory have a couple of personae to go with different sets of outfits, but lately I've been sticking to my Saxon one (9th/10th century) more and more. That's the one our tent matches. I do want to develop a 13th century german one to go with my husband's persona at some point, and he keeps planning to have a few saxon outfits to go with mine.
Basically, every year I try to get closer to being consistent in my clothing and so forth. And I *try* (and usually fail) to spend more of my time really in persona (not talking about what's period, etc). That's hard. Especially for a herald. (I can't do it at all while running a consultation table.)
At some point, I'd like to try a day at an event without my glasses. And I don't mean wearing contacts, which I no longer own. (or maybe would be more appropriate here ) |

Clothing and name are about it. I aim towards appropriate camp gear as well, and use all this stuff in living history too but a period tent takes too much work for me to handle alone. It was a bigger chore than I want to ask people to help me with, so I scaled back.
The clothing, I mainly wear when it's appropriate for the weather. I do get tired of hearing, "Aren't you hot?" when I'm wearing all that garb on an 85(F)-degree day. My new answer to that is, "I figured if I was going to be hot anyway, I might as well be fashionable." |

Aeth has multiple persona dosorder too!
For me my persona is not so importand if it comes to stuff and periods.
But I think I play out the little boy my persona is more than others play out the noblewoman etc. That is my way to "respect" my persona.
And people react and respond to it quite well. It is nice to behave like a twelve year old boy without being looked at as being nuts. It just acts naturally and its a lotta fun.
If I am wearing a cap (and sometimes bandages) even the "other" boys often dont realize that I am a grown woman.
Gives me a lotta insight in the todays kids and young teenage world.....

At this point I'm still trying to break away from my old Ottoman persona. I have crap tons of garb in just about every color for that which is making it way too easy to slip back into something I'm ready to leave behind. I really enjoy getting into character though. So while I may not have as much to work with as I used to... it's something new and fun for me to do. There's always something challenging about having "room to grow."
Do female fighters have more of a problem adopting a working persona than others? How much bending can we do to be both functional and authentic?

| I think in many cases it isn't practical for female fighters to resolve everything within their persona, hence the MPD. My first persona was male, merovingian to reconcile the long hair with male clothing and interests. Didn't work out. Later I cut my hair and changed to female viking/scottish isles, ran away from home and dressed as a boy. It worked but was a bit over-the-top "pirates and gypsies". I haven't really messed with persona stories much since because reconciling fat old viking housewife with tourney maven and calligrapher is just flat out not gonna happen. |

| I just have interests that run to to many time periods and cultures, more so than anything else. |

The group I camp with and I alltry to get our camp & gear looking cool, we have period tents and try to cover all visible plastic in our kits, we also try to stay away from "space viking" syndrom, of "being" 10th c Norse, yet fighting with a heater... not that our kits are perfect, but we try, and enjoy the results. _________________ Adwen Wrenn, Squire to Sir Hrothgar Thorvaldsson |
