In an effort to learn and share the joys and efficacy of video analysis, I figured I'd try posting a video and we could watch it and discuss what we see in it. If people like it, I'll try to post something regularly. The video for this week is:

Great idea.

The first thing I notice is that they both hold their swords in what I think of as "shield wall" position, more or less horizontally.

(And the guy on the right has fairly complicated heraldry, which I thought was discouraged, but I know that's not what I'm supposed to be watching for).

The guy on the right has marshaled arms on his shield. There's 4 different sets of arms represented on his shield. I recognize his because he used to live in Atenveldt and was a good friend of my Laurel's, and the populace badge for the West.

Also that particular guard style is pretty standard here in Atenveldt.

It looks quite static to me. Not a lot of moving around or up and down. Stand, bang bang, reset. Repeat. Repeat.

And they're mostly doing two or three hits at a time, not more.

Well, they're both royal peers, and neither want to show the other any sort of opening, so they're fighting very conservatively and not doing much to break their guards. I think that is one reason there is so much of the fast little face thrust - it's a fairly safe blow in that the sword never really gets out of position for being in front of their own face.

These are guys that don't need to throw a ton of shots. They are usually only throwing a couple of shots to try and create an opening, or throwing at one they already see that the rest of us don't notice. In my experience a lot of Crown finals look just like that. They spend the first portion getting the measure of each other before they start narrowing in on tiny targets.

Watch at the very end when King Gemini throws a shot to Duke Matthias' left leg. That shot and the block were so damn quick I had to rewind the video and watch it a couple of times. And the winning shot looked like a moulinee (sp?). I had to rewind and watch that a couple of times too.

I love HG Matthias' shield and body motion when he blocks -- he steps into and out of blows and dips with his whole body. I need to block like that.

You don't see crown finals with weapon styles like that a lot, that's for sure. I had a hard time telling just which of those last blows thrown was the winning one though.

In which bout? To me - In the first bout - which was re-fought and didn't count - Duke Sven had stopped for some reason before the final blow - wrap - was thrown. The next bout, it looked like a high head wrap. The third bout at the end was occluded by the marshal and I couldn't follow. I believe it was a thrust to the body with the thrusty weapon. The fourth bout, Duke Sven did a very pretty face thrust with the thrusty weapon. They decided, though, that they wanted to refight that fight also. The fifth bout, the final blow looks to be a head wrap.

I'm interested in the lateral skipping. It seems to always be counterclockwise, to the right. I was always told bouncy movement was a bad thing.

I remember fighting Duke Sven in pickups at Pennsic sometime.

The very last one I think.

Anyway the bouncy footwork kind of occurred to me too but it also seems like at a certain point fighters of high skill and experience often throw the rules the rest of us are told out the window.

this is my response to the first video:

One thing I noticed right off the bat is that after 0:59 mark when they reset they were both within each other's weapon range....and it seemed they kept resetting close if not within range (it may well be at some points just the angle of the camera view too perhaps?)

then at 1:08 the colorful fighter took advantage of the "comfort" of the resetting and fired off right away...which I liked

fighter on the right liked to do a few tiny steps before setting up for his shots...

up until 2:20 its one shot or two shot combos... then here colorful fighter throws a 3 shot (wouldve been interesting if he fired off that combo right as the other fighter threw his shot and didnt give him time to reset after the shot?....kind of like how he reacted at 0:32)

watched it about 4-5 times... to me it looks like a finals for a tourney...they both want to win and so don't take too many risks with how and when they decided to throw shots... including multi-shot combos.

Have to wait for crappy hotel wifi to load youtube video.... le sigh Sad

I do like this video discussion idea Cunian... after our talk at Blackstone I had to come look for this blog... just been busy with work, unfortunately not all good stuff...but such is life for a girl working a male dominated career. Either you're in or you're out and somedays it feels like neither one! *slight rant done now* Sad
