One thing I noticed just with Crown finals in general is that there is often a lot of resetting. Like they approach, neither sees what they're looking for so they never really engage. I'm actually really intrigued by the mental side of fighting at that level so it's interesting to watch.

So some things to think about : People like us need to watch for basics and practice the basics until we do them perfectly. That is the difference between an advanced fighter and beginners/intermediates.
There are subtleties at the advanced level that we have no business trying to emulate until we have made the basics automatic. This does not mean don't watch advanced fighters. It means don't try it at home til you have 20-30 years of fighting under your belt and you uinderstand why they are doing what they are doing.
Remember that there are some pretty major inter-Kingdom stylistic differences. Fighters in the East fight differently than fighters in Atlantia, who fight differently than fighters in Ansteorra, etc, etc. Be aware of this.
Crown tourneys are fought differently than regular tourneys which are fought differently than practices.
MOre later. I gotta go to bed.

wait 20-30 years to try advanced technique??? did you mean 2-3 by chance?

No, I meant 20-30 years. That's how long the guys in the Prova Dura finals have been fighting. And they aren't doing anything fancy or especially "advanced". Watch them closely. They have the basics down pat: their guards are so tight and their movements so economical it looks like they aren't doing anything. They don't stumble or trip over their own feet or hesitate when they take a step. What they are doing in the still moments is looking for that tiny fraction of an opening, that one little mistake that gives them the win. Guy throws a shot, other guy drops his sheild a bare inch to block and goes right back to guard, like nothing ever happened. Newbs drop their sheild 3 inches and get pasted in the head. Advanced guys cross B range with his guard in place, throwing shots, ready to kill. Newbs try to close the gap, but forget to stay in guard while in motion and get busted in the face.
Perfect basics are what separate the advanced practicioners from the newbs and the intermediates. That kind of perfection takes decades to develop.
The advanced stuff they are doing is all in the mental game and unless you know how to play at that level, you need to stick to your basics. (I am using the general you, not referring to you, Rohesia, in particular.) Intimidation and mind games are the advanced piece of our game along with perfect basics.
The first years of learning any martial discipline are like learning the alphabet, syntax and grammar. Once you got that stuff down, then you can try to write the Greatest Novel Ever Written. Otherwise, you're just scribbling on the wall.
All this is just one long term martial artists opinion. YMMV.

I find myself wondering how my teenage king would do against them.
Some people are just naturally physically gifted. They get into the sport at a young age and do really well, get belted early on and go win Crown early. Then you watch what happens to them 10+ years down the road and they don't get worse, they get even better because their mental game has matured too. Those are the fighters that can walk into just about any Crown list or high profile tourney and win it. |
I guess I'm not sure what your point is. Some people are gifted. They should just go forth and do great deeds. Is anyone here that guy or girl? Are you?
My grandknight won his first crown when he was 19. He's won about 15 or 20 others since then. He's also lost a couple hundred lists and lost to total newbs because he lost his focus for a nanosecond. Gifts can only take you so far.
I'm gifted at this game. I have alot of talent and I have alot of experience in martial arts. I still focus on my basic skills, concepts and techniques and making them as perfect as I can. This is why I have success at this game.
