This is a big cultural difference between kingdoms. In some kingoms, fighting in Crown is encouraged for everyone, regardless of the desire or ability to sit the throne. That aint the way we do it here. Here, we frown on combatants who enter without the ability or resources to reign. Not the ability to win -- I'm talking about the ability to reign. But we have a very large population and many other tourneys and pas. It has only been over the last 15 years that Crown's focus has tightened to selecting our royalty. Before that, we had 120 man Crown lists. It was nearly impossible to get suitable sites to hold the event.

The biggest list we have had in Lochac in the past 6 years or so (we've only been kingdom for about 9) is around 20 ( the most recent) the average before then is 10. The one I entered had 10 in the list, and not a single white belt.

The biggest Tourney in the Kingdom calendar brings in anywhere between 60-80.

I think it is embarrassing, and I'm sick of the excuses I hear about not entering. Things like "i'm not good enough" or "I might actually win".

It is hardly a glorious victory when you win from a list of 10.

Yes, it doesn't help that we are spread out over a large area (most neighbouring baronies are at least a 3hr drive away, if not a 3hr flight), so reigning is really quite expensive and time consuming, but we have a fund to help pay, and there is a support network ready to be tapped.

Wu - the fealty thing I can respect, but it should be your first reason, not your second.

rant.

As Jesmond mentioned, perhaps it's a question of Kingdom culture. Here, you don't enter a crown tourney to see how you'd do, or to guage where you are against other fighters in the Kingdom. That's what Meridian Grand Tourney is for. Would I be tickled to death if I actually won? Of course I would. The fact is, I won't. Not YET. But there are also other reasons behind that. I just picked the most salient point.

Facts are facts. This is not a mental speedbump. This is a cold hard truth. I'm NOT good enough to win a crown list. But my intention is to work so that one day I AM. It would be a greater disservice to my training to think that I'm ready when I'm just not.

My intention was not to upset you and I'm sorry I did. I'm afraid I don't understand why you're upset. (I tend to have that affect on people.) I'm just giving my reasons for why I don't fight in Crown. It shouldn't affect how you feel or how you play the game. Someday I will. Who knows? Maybe I'll be the first QBHOH of Meridies? Maybe I won't.

Here there are tourneys after Crown that are a good option to fight in if you don't want to fight in Crown for whatever reason. I am going to fight in Queen's Champion or maybe Warlord in August.

That's how it works in Ealdormere too.

Our last crown tourney only had 10 combatants, so one could say that that wasn't a glorious victory, but the 10 combatants included 3 knights/counts by right of arms, and most of the rest were Hammers (the Grant of Arms for fighting).
