OK, so this is SOO a girl post...
I have long hair and I'm tired of it getting trashed and hacked off from the edge of my helm- but I hated wearing an arming cap

so I now put in leave in conditioner before braiding my hair...

so far it works great (and my helm smells quite nice)
what do other people do?

When I had long hair I always went around and begged one of the other lady fighters to braid my hair. I've never been able to braid it myself. Now I have shorter hair and am probably going to have to make an arming cap of some sort.

Brading and Armour cap, really.
I hate putting chemistry in my hair. I even do not wash it as often as other people. Donīt know- per haps this is the secret why I get it so long so fast?
also if I brade it and open and brush it afterwards it has such a nice volume look.... Wink

A sallet works best. The swoopy nature of the back of the helm, allows room for a pony tail, and doesn't cut the hair.

An aventail will hold your hair down off the bottom edge of the helm.

Underarmour makes a cap that works great to keep wispy hair out of your eyes.

I hate a braid, because it stops me from pulling back the hair again after it gets out of the braid... unless I redo the braid.

I try to keep my hair wet... that also helps control body heat as well... its a natural heat sink when wet.

-- Not a chick... but I've got longer hair than most.

Since my persona wears braided pigtails anyway, I use that for fighting. I also wear a padded coif. If your hair is braided tightly, it's already supposed to look flat so you don't have to worry about helm hair. The only thing, is when I put on my leather scale armour, I have to hold the braids out of the way or they'll get caught on the scales. OUCH! Then I wear a surcoat over the armour to also keep my hair from catching. I've received a chuckle or two as a fighter with pigtails.

Maestra Deborah of the Barony of Sundragon here in Atenveldt wears pigtails all the time. Smile

I'm used to looking a bit matted after I fight, but I find if I don't braid my hair it gets hacked off by the hand full

hehe, I think is worse if you have short hair (like myself). you get horrific cowlick type things! Smile My lord calls me "sonic" when I take my helm off 'cause my hair's all over the place and blue...

My lord's wife made me what she calls a snood. It's a tube of cotton and I guess some spandex or something stretchy blend fabric with a strip of elastic around the front cuff. (So a headband with a length of fabric tube from the "band")

I wear the cuff around my face, so the ears are inside it. Keeps the hair out of the way, absorbs sweat, and prevents my ears from getting origami-ed by the padding of the helm.

When my hair's a bit longer I usually try and French braid it - that started as a persona thing, too. Between the braid and the snood, it works pretty well, even just in a pony tail.

I like it and it looks period[ish] if I'm going early English peasent sort of.

My lord Garet likes me to wet it and use it to wipe sweat out of his face, too.

I've seen lady fighters briad strips of fabric into their hair to protect against catching on things and being hacked off by helm.

When I had long hair I wore it loose and it never got hacked about.

Mind you, the bottom of my helm is not sharp.

my experience of long hair was keep it away from mail and you're fine. The only reason I tied it back at all was visability.

I learned something new I dislike about long hair at Pennsic this year. One should endeavor to tuck it somewhere rather than having a braid or ponytail sticking out. I died in the crush in the Wall Battle and ended up with my hair caught under someone's boot. Made it hard to get up and out when the time came and I ended up leaving more hair than I would have liked on the field. I think if I hadn't been dealing with the rain after and had had a campmate that would cut hair, I would have had it lopped off within the hour.

you know, I love what I look like with helmet hair.

For some reason, the natural oils make my straight hair curly and all mighty greek looking and stuff. Then, of course, I have to wash it out, because you know, ew.

but until I do, I think it looks sexy. Anything that makes you feel sexy actually makes you sexy.

of course, my arming cap keeps the hair from getting cut, and keeps it out of my face. I need to spend a couple of days learning to braid it...

I made my sister an arming cap that had a long tube extending off the back of it for her braid (I called it the "Battle snood") and it seemed to work well and got beaten to all heck... but now Lyonnete wears her braid inside her cuirass instead, which I think looks a little odd since she now has a tail poking out, but is safer both for the hair and other fighters who might trip or get tangled up in the loose braid.

On a side note, I really liked the shorter hairs she got on the side of her face from her gorget cutting her hair and cut myself some because I liked the look. Smile
