I was recommended to come here in order to get my question answered as to what arms do female Sovereigns wear. Apparently the answer to that question is different in different Kingdoms/Principalities so now I have to track down every First Princess by her own hand and First Queen by her own hand to find out what each territorial custom is.

And the reason I need this is because I plan to portray each First Princess or First Queen in a tapestry that I'm doing for the AS 50 Challenge. I would post the link to see the panels I've done so far, but since I'm a newbie, it won't let me.

Thank you for any help you might be able to give.

What is a First Princess or First Queen? I've never heard this term.

The number of princesses and/or queens by right of arms is very few so that really shouldn't take that long to find out.

Well, I'm using the capitalized First to indicate the first one ever as I think in the Principality of the Mists and Oertha, there have been more than one.

I found the list of every one that ever had been on the Ironrose webpage (I think it was Ironrose) but they are surprisingly hard to track down in person. The closest I've ever gotten to actually interviewing the First Princess of Ealdormere was speaking to her Consort who actually was very helpful in answering my question (pleased, as he was, to discover he's going to be immortalized in my tapestry!).

The pressing question is which of a Principality/Kingdom's arms does a female Sovereign wear? I found a webpage that lists them all (including in some cases the populous badges and any heir arms that a territory might have. In some cases the arms were listed specifically as King and Queen (or Prince and Princess) - suggesting that there were specific gendered arms - or sometimes they were just listed as Sovereign and Consort, suggesting non-gendered and applied to winner of the tourney and the individual that they wished to honor.

So far, I've been able to get some information from another Princess of the Mists (not the first but by her own hand) and she says that she wore specifically the arms of the Princess, but walked on the right and was announced first - indicating her right of arms. The Consort of Ealdomere said that at the time, they had only the Principality arms which they both wore. Seems like every territory might do it differently, so I wish to ask to make sure I have the images stitched correctly.

If I might suggest a page to assist in the research of your question, you might visit conalscorner dot com (mangled as I've not yet made five posts... sorry!) and visit the "SCA Kingdoms" button.

I've tried to list each of the first Princes & Princesses as well as the first Kings and Queens of each Kingdom.

I've also included artwork for all of the devices, ensigns, and populace badges for each Kingdom. If a Queens device is not listed on the site, it is beacuse there is no such device registered in the Armory. All of the artwork on the kingdom pages is licensed through Creative Commons, and is free for use within the SCA. If you might need any of the artwork in a larger size, or different format, don't hesitate to let me know.

I spent quite a while digging through old documents and archived websites to get the information as accuate as possible, I hope it will be helpful to you.

I split this topic off from a sticky unrelated post in a different section. >_>
