tried putting this under a differnet category, but it wasnt placed well with the topic i think.
yeah. no one really looks at the event part.
ok, so i was just at harpers retreat,
a fairly small event in stonemarch for bards.
there was also archery and fencing.
but thats not why it was great
i was sitting having lunch,
and on the basketball court nearby (yeah, i know!)
there was a group of kids playing.
out of them there was one boy who was about 13 and a little girl about 5 or 6.
they had these all foam swords,
and they were play fighting with them.
she said "when i grow up im going to be a youth fighter!"
i know that might touch me more than the adults,
but it is the principle.
and then later other people had the swords, and she told them to give her one
it was awesome.
and she just kept at it,
being really relentless.
it makes it more awesome to know that the more female youth and heavy fighters there are in the SCA,
younger girls have people to look up to,
and also, the more female fighters that there are,
the less descrimination will happen.
and the boy was fighting her back,
cause she looked tough
he then later said he could fight her with one hand behind his back,
and i think that was because of her age,
and the fact they only had one sword each,
not because she was a girl
but then i noticed that he never actually followed through with that threat....
yeah.
so that is one reason we should fight.
for the future.
and hearing that made me a lot more motivated.
because the way i act with affect peoples thoughts on female fighters.
and they need to be good ones.
and if because of my efforts, it makes it so just one more girl can be given a fair and equal chance to fight,
then it makes all the hard work worth it.

Sarre That's so cool!
My little girl is 2 1/2 (more like 2 3/4 now) and she told me that she wanted to be a knight for halloween. I was so proud. I fully expected her to say she wanted to 100 different things between then and halloween but she has held steady.
Another girl a about 7 or 8 at an event this weekend had on a lammelar vest and wooden sword and shield that her father had made for her. She had red hair and looked very fierce. |

thats awesome!
we need more female fighters.
the boys smell lol.
yeah, we still need more girls.
and i was able to recruit a friend to fight,
so that is also cool.
i wonder how many little girls there are that harbor secret dreams to become knights?
i know i did after i read the Tamora Peirce tortall series. (especially Lioness series and Protecting the Small series)
that was in fifth grade.
and then i found the SCA

Oh my gosh I love those books. I haven't read them in a while, but the bindings are falling apart from reading them so many times.
I was fighting in a Pas de Arms at Great Northeastern War two years ago and a little girl asked to carry my shield, so I let her. She told me that I had to win because I was a girl and that I had to show the boys that girls are tough. It was cool and kind of scary being on the receiving end of hero-worship. Mostly cool though.
Another time at practice a family stopped to watch us. I was in armor and heard the little girl sadly comment that girls weren't playing. I popped my helm and her eyes got so big and she smiled. It was cool.
The point of my ramblings is that I think lots of girls want to be knights and fight, but they may not know that can. We are changing that. Good job us.

and i keep rereading them.
and that is awesome about the little girl!

it happened again at a demo i went to this weekend.
there was a father and two little girls, one seven and one four,
who had all these questions about the sca,
and i was talking to them for at least 15 minutes,
adn it was so cool,
cause before that they couldve thought that girls didnt fight,
but i had my armour on and told them that girls could fight,
and it was awesome.
also, at first with the heavy list fighters, all the new people who came to try were girls. it was so cool.

That really is cool.
I don't remember how old I was when I figured out what a don was, but for as long as I can remember I've only ever wanted to be a doņa. However, it wasn't because I had strong female fighter role models to look up to. I had my father, Iolo, and Tivar Moondragon to look up to. These dons, as well as the other dons that I worked with in my 6 years of fighting in Bryn Gwylad, were nothing but encouraging and helpful to me. I think it's really cool that I never felt like the sex of a fighter should ever be an issue and that their inspiration transcended gender. |

yeah, i dont really see it as an issue either, but i have periods of time that i do think that, like when i have a bad practice and think that all the guys are better and stronger than i am, so i do know the importance of seeing that you can do things, even if it takes seeing another to get that.
(i dont know if what i wrote makes sense, but it does in my head )

Here is my little girl in her knight costume. A couple days before hand she said something about wearing a dress. I found an old sleevless dress that is knee length and she had a tabard.

I'm glad the pictures worked. It kept telling me it didn't load so I added the post with the link.
Some friends loaned the breastplate to us. Someone made it for their daughter when she was small. They had a helm too but it is rather heavy and doesn't stay on right.
Our current princess is Sir Ariel and my daughter is just delighted that someone can be both a princess and a knight at the same time. (Martino was the one who won the tourney, not Ariel, though she did enter.) |
