I've heard of people who use thier shield both offensively and defensively. Is this actually legal in the SCA, and if so, what are some way to do this? I'm better at two handed weapons, but I still have to authorize with a shield first. I figured if I can turn my sheild into somewhat of a weapon, it might be easier to stay more within the lines of my natural fighting style and thus do better.

You are not allowed to use the shield to contact anything other than the opponents shield or weapon.

Why do you have to authorize sword and board? Why can't you authorize with a two handed weapon? I authorized with a great sword, and I now fight sword and board. It's more to show that you're safe with the weapons and follow/know the rules of the list than whether you are actually good.

It must be a kingdom requirement, then. Last I checked Ealdormere requires everybody to authorize in single-handed weapon and shield first. (It is preferred if the single-handed weapon is a sword, but not required.)

Oops. I guess I just assumed that it was the same in other kingdoms like it was in the West. My bad. I wonder what else is different for authorizing in different kingdoms.

Anyways, no, you can't really use your shield as a weapon. You can kind-of use it to attack and put it in the way of the weapon directly, or push on the opponent's shield, but you can't use it to actually attack the other person.

Atenveldt doesn't even have separate authorizations for different weapons within the same scope. We just have separate authorizations for heavy, combat archery, siege weaponry, rapier and cut and thrust.

You can use a shield very actively, but you can't use it as a weapon. You can use it to move your opponent's shield and weapon around.

Thanks for your answers! I didn't really think it sounded legal, but I wanted to make sure. I'll be authorizing in the Middle Kingdom, and they require you to authorize first with sheild and sword, and then for other things like two handed weapons or archery.

What people mean when they talk about "offensive" or "aggressive" shieldwork is shieldpushes, hooks and similar moves against the opponents shield or weapon. Blocking your opponents vision also falls into this category.
