I got a new hilt which is somewhat heavier than the old - maybe as much as a pound, maybe only half. I took it to practice and loved it, except I was slow and pathetic with it. I've got 2, maybe 3 more practices before a bear pit next weekend. Wondering if I can get enough used to this by then, or whether I should use the old, lighter basket. Got to thinking I really have little clue at figuring out the time frame for increasing weights on things are such, thus the stupid question.

I would use it for a couple more practices and see how it goes -- I always use a super light basket hilt because I like my swords tip heavy and when I borrow a sword that is basket heavy it takes a long time for me to get used to it. Maybe make yourself another sword with the lighter basket hilt as a backup in case you don't get used to it?

If you use your heavier hilt in practice then you'll be stronger when you use your lighter hilt anyway, so practicing with it and seeing how it goes is win-win.

It takes me a couple of months to get used to anything new.

I am going to go with sixty or so days too.
That will be lessened if you do some light resistance training (weights) in the meantime, but you wont be able to really significantly decrease the amount of time it takes without taking the risk of hurting yourself.

I was better with it last night than I had been Thursday, but I switched out swords halfway through because my elbow was beginning to flare up a bit and that was far more comfortable. I think it's worth working with but it's not going to be prime time in a week. One problem is that I am hitting light even with all that weight because my focus went down into the hand and isn't making it any further.
