The Kingdom of An Tir will be sponsoring a Lioness Tourney at Estrella for female heavy/ rattan fighters. It will take place on the Western Battlefield at 3 pm on Thursday (after the Outlands Tourney is concluded). I have confirmations from Sir Bryne, Sir Roisin, Sir Rauokinn and I'm pretty sure Sir Mari (all female members of the Chiv) that they will come out and participate either in the tourney or fighting byes (Roisin may still be healing from knee surgery and unable to fight). I encourage you all to come out and fight in the tourney, it should be a really fun time.

I wonder if I could be so crass as to comment to this honestly?
I am a female, first of all....
If this was a "Men Only", us women would have a tissy fit.
Women have equal rights in the SCA as men do.
So, why do we have a tourney just for women? It seems like a gauk-fest to me.
My apologies ahead of time, I mean absolutely no disrespect. It's an honest question. |

| We have a men-only tourney at Pennsic this year - "My dad can beat up your dad". There's been a distinct lack of fits. At the very, very large interkingdom events quite a few limited-base tourneys are held, and since there are always more things going on than any one person can do anyway, it's not really a problem. (Giants vs. Dwarves, Greybeard Tourney, Leftie Tourney) Also, from an organizer's point of view, it may be the only way to have a "normal sized" tourney at one of these monster events. |

I do the Ladies' Schlager Prize tourney at Estrella every year I'm there. It's just a really fun tourney where you can meet other female fighters. I'm looking forward to participating in the Lioness tourney this year too hopefully. I think it's a problem if women are the only other people you want to or feel comfortable competing against ever and you never want to fight guys too.
But I've never understood what the big deal is about once a year getting together to fight with other women. After all, the number of women fighting in the SCA is still small enough that some women have never met another female fighter face to face before, and there are still problems with getting the right equipment, misconceptions about how to armor women, etc. The only difference between just having a meet and beat is that there's a format and someone wins. A tourney is more likely to attract fighters than just a meet and beat. _________________ It's not the most powerful animal that survives. It's the most efficient. -Georges St-Pierre

Chloe -- the tourney was pretty awesome actually. It was a great way to meet other women fighters and I would say 80% of the women that entered were pretty serious fighters. I made some lasting friendships from that tournament.
It was in no way a gauk-fest. Just a fun time and chance to get to fight a bunch of other women fighters who are taking the path seriously. And I would wager that none of us thought that we could not compete with the guys, but it was pretty fun to just swing stick with the girls for a couple of hours.
YMMV. People seem to have very emotionally based reactions to women's only tournies . . . . I just tend to not associate any political BS with them and look at them as another opportunity to fight (yay!) and to meet people I have interests in common with (yay!). From my perspective its all win.

From the list I saw there were some pretty excellent fighters in attendance. That makes me happy and is imo an even better reason for me to go and support it. _________________ It's not the most powerful animal that survives. It's the most efficient. -Georges St-Pierre

and btw - I have no trouble with male only tournaments as long as there are mixed too. I LIKE having separate gender stuff sometimes.
Just my two cents... _________________ Lady Constance Stoune, the Shire of Cuil Cholium (Columbus, IN)

I guess what I see is only fighters. Not men, not women, but fighters.
I don't take offense to it, I was just curious about it is all. I also hope that I didn't offend with it either. Don't get me wrong, I would totally attend it. I would fight in it too if I felt that I was ready for a tourney (which I don't, but if I did I would!). It just seemed like it was making a division in a group that didn't need a division is all. Hopefully I didn't come across as catty on that, I meant it with a good heart. |
