This year I didn't get a lot done that I'd planned - didn't really get a lot farther with the fitness stuff, didn't really get much done on the armour, didn't authorize in any new weapons forms. I did get to a lot of events, take on a bit more of a leadership role with the local gang, did do decently at keeping up with the local hotshots, did fight in Crown, did spiff up my presentation a bit with an arming tent, a couple banners, some new period seats and an embroidered surcoat. My back got better - down to a chronic low-level problem. My knee got injured and is now a recurrent real problem. The daughter got authorized. I do think I am closer to authorizing with some other forms. I have been practicing, just not regularly enough to build much clue. I have got the rest of the family's and my knight's armour in sufficient shape that I'm not feeling like I shouldn't be prioritizing my own.
For next year: It looks like getting to events and practices will be harder. Hubby will be working weekends and will not get home in the afternoon in time to go to practice afterwards, gas is more expensive, etc. etc. We are starting out the year behind financially. I'm thinking authorizing at Highland River Melees in pole and spear. I will get to Pennsic the whole time, being deputy land agent. We've got some of the best unbelts in the Kingdom local and some good practices going so there should be plenty of practice opportunities. I'd like to build some customized articulated, supportive leg armor for the bad knee. Basically, I am just trying to hang on, not wipe out with the knee, keep getting to enough stuff that I know folks and stay used to competition. Ideally, I'd manage regular fitness work, fight at one event/month on average, upgrade most of the elements of my armour and have the power train working reliably. In my dreams I'd like to get to Gulf Wars. |

What a crazy year! I'm pleased to have remained in the service of my knight another year. I learned to leg. I may not be able to kill anyone on a regular basis, but I can leg pretty much anyone. Surprising to me, I've embraced some goals in the service of my House that never held any interest for me before.
I upgraded by armour. I fought in the CotT. I've had the honor of serving my Queen. I'm learning so much.
I've been hurt. I was faced with some decisions that have helped define the person I am going to be. I'm healing.
I'm finally starting to learn to create openings. Maybe I'll get that figured out next year. _________________ First authorized: 1996 - 2000

I'm pretty much still stuck in neutral in terms of SCA stuff. I'm making things, but only for sale because I'm trying to keep the ship afloat. So, my favorite stuff I haven't been able to do at all. I haven't picked up a paintbrush to do any illumination in probably a year. Which is scary because it's one of the things I love to do most.
I did get to work on my kit a lot this year, which really has helped keep me from becoming really glum about not being able to fight. Tinkering with my kit has kept my inspiration levels up, and kept me dreaming. My sincerest hope is that after I am done with the paramedic program, which swallows lives whole, I will be able to fulfill the increasingly horrible longing to fight like a banshee. Maybe I can use that pent up angst to my advantage. In the mean time, I am wanting to make some more kit upgrades. One is lengthening my aventail. I need brass rings in the right size. Another is saving up and ordering the corrazina kit from Murdock. It will mean peening a million rivets, but I will get a lot out of the process. I also want to make some scale sabatons and maybe if I can save up get a mail hauberk too. And make some new belts. I'm no longer anyone's apprentice, so it's time that I create something that represents me.
On a personal note, it's been a really up and down sort of year. I went through one of the most difficult periods of my life getting through the fire academy. It was important and I hated almost every minute of it, but it won me respect at work and helped me find a lot of qualities within myself that I had never really nurtured. Physically it wrecked me, but also helped me a lot. I dropped weight and grew a lot stronger. If I can do anything this year aside from work and school it's going to be getting back to the gym and really increasing the intensity of my workouts. Lifting weights really helped some of my cranky joint injuries and my back.
Financially the whole year sucked all around. 2011 doesn't look like it will be any different unless the hubby finds decent work. I'm pretty sure I can do this for another year though. I'm just really ready for time for myself.
In the near future, I really want to hit Gulf and Pennsic. Also Sport of Kings and La Prova Dura. I really want to see things in other kingdoms and meet the people I've had the good fortune through this forum and my business to encounter. _________________ It's not the most powerful animal that survives. This has been a hella hard year. Yet I still want to fight. My plan is to lighten my harness and make it more compact to handle my new living situation.
I will also be learning to fight left handed sword and sheild. Hopefully my hand will heal up and I'll be able to fight great weapons again someday.
I'll be 47 on Tuesday. I've lost a ton of weight recently now I just need to improve my physical condition. I may try to figure out a way to market excessive stress as a weight loss supplement. _________________ Martel le Hardi

This year I got noticeable better. I fought a ton and I did a ton of drill work. Although not as much as I would have liked. I did not manage to lose any significant weight this year.
So, goals for 2011:
actually lose 30 lbs.
attend two big wars (estrella definitely and then either gulf or pennsic)
more drill work
get my shield work up so I'm covering my leg and offside body better
win a couple tournaments |
