suck.

Why, you ask? Because they are out of period (18th-19th centuries). Because unless you are Indian you'd never have used one. Because they simply game the system, which is freakin' LAME.

Real ones are too light to penetrate heavy European mail and not much for blocks against really heavy blows.

The only reason they have any use in the SCA is because of our rules set.

Discuss, argue, set my underpants on fire, whatever.

We do lots of things that aren't period, from our award structure to scrolls in court to how we have court. Even knights do things that "game the system".

Lame is lame no matter who does it. I was once told it was period to buy ones way to the Crown. A douchebag move is a douchebag move. We should work towards making things better not maintaining a silly status quo.

I was disappointed when they made the ruling that they were no longer allowed as I was looking forward to making one. One of the knights in our group who no longer plays used one to great effectiveness.

Now that is a good rule. I know a duke who uses a madu really well. It is still lame and personally, I avoid fighting him when he has his madu out. I'll fight him any other time.

I wish the SCA would take up Atlantia's appearance rules. We would improve by leaps and bounds just by doing that.

But since they aren't legal in my kingdom anymore, the point is moot for me I suppose. The only thing I would have used them for is tourneys anyway. To each their own. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I don't think setting your underpants on fire is an absolute necessity. lol

We are better off without the madu. They are just really bad for the SCA.

I appreciate you not setting my underpants on fire. This pair was rather expensive.

I think they are dumb because they game the system. IMO a cooler less cheaty weapon to use is inverted or 'Christian' greatsword, which Duke Jonathan von Trotha here in Atenveldt uses really well.

Isabella, I've never seen this style. No one fights it that I've seen in my kingdom. Do you have a picture or could you explain?

It's basically a greatsword built with a thrusting tip on the 'pommel' and used inverted, with a gauntlet. It's called Christian greatsword if I remember right because it resembles a cross the way you hold it. Here's a video of a guy fighting with one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S78cGAhZlqc

I guess you could say it's not a big difference between the two, but a madu is pretty much the only way you can build a shield that you can also attack with. You're not really supposed to use your hands to block something with a great weapon or even a shield basket because it's not considered a legal target I think. So while a madu isn't expressly against the rules except in certain kingdoms there are people who have issued with it for not only being totally a-historical for anyone except african or maybe some asian or indian personas, it falls into a sort of legal grey area.

That's my maybe somewhat limited knowledge of the madu. It wouldn't be appropriate in any way for my kit or my persona so I don't have a reason to use one.

Thank you for explaining. Those are not legal in Meridies so that must be why I never heard of it. We're not allowed to have thrusting tips on each end of a one-handed weapon. Some have taken to calling it the anti-madu rule. Madus and anything like them have been pretty much thrown out. Anything over 48 inches can have thrusting tips on both ends, but when you're 5'3" that's just unweildy.

Hmm...I believe my post and a reply from Audax somehow met at a dark party and had a strange child.

Perhaps she hit Edit instead of Quote on my post?

I am rethinking my earlier statement and considering a possible axe or hammer. Probably more towards the axe as I haven't found evidence of a hammer weapon in Chinese armories. It would work the same way, and should I lose my primary weapon for whatever reason, the fight can continue without a hold because I would still be armed (I'm a better two-handed fighter anyway).

Hmmmmmm... Scratchy, scratchy

It's possible. I can't tell you how many times I've edited someone's post by accident instead of quoting and had to go back and fix it.
