My persona is a 9c saxon, daughter of a thegn. My father, Eormenric and brothers traveled to Andreasweald in 899 to collect my bride price from a kentish thegn. The vikings attacked the city's half-built defences, and razed the twon, all the men were killed, the women taken as captives, ect. my brother and father faught bravely there to defend thier future in law, but were slaugtered as well. Now, I am in charge of Haslemere myself. I have always been surrounded by men and soldiers and it was easy for me to learn stradegy and fighting techniques from them. Now I am thier thegn and must defend my heal from the marauding viking. I am well-veresed in the arts and reading. I make clothing, shoes, armor, beads, and know the properties of herbs and medicines. I hope someday to have many strong daughters to rule Haslemere when I am gone. I get my name, Eowyn, from my father, Eormenric, and my mother, Aelfwyn. THis is a tradional way of naming saxon girls and not a Tolkienish invention. I teach many other young women the arts of war as men are often away from our homes to fight themselves since King Alfreds death. Thats how I am in armor in The SCA and how i balance my love of the A&S with my fighting.

I'm posting my persona bit as a reply here because I have a late 9th/early 10th century Saxon persona as well.
Part of why I picked this time and place was because I was studying Anglo-Saxon language and history (I was taking a class on Alfred the Great, among other things), and I was fascinated by Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians (Alfred's daughter), who led armies against the Welsh. So I made my persona a Mercian woman. |
